MEMORIAL OF ST SCHOLASTICA

MAY WE REMAIN FAITHFUL TO THE END

It is not enough to do good, it is always important that we should end well. It is often said that we can never say that we have conquered until we have reached the end of the line. No one is a saint or sinner until they have finished the race.
The coming of King Solomon after his father David brought hope to the people. He was anointed and the blessings of God was with him. God gave him wisdom to rule the people, he built the temple and brought the ark of the covenant into it. At this stage, everything seemed good and well ordered until Solomon began to marry from different tribes and races. In his quest to please his many wives and concubines, he began to wander from God. He began to think of evil, pleasure and gain.
When we begin to get too comfortable because of the blessings of God,  when we begin to please ourselves and people instead of God, when we begin to think that we are self sufficient, we cannot hold on to God to the end.
St Scholastica whom we celebrate today, held on to God in virginity till the end. She followed her twin brother St Benedict to Cassino where she lived as a nun until she died at the age of 67. It is not enough to be doing well at the moment, let us pray for the grace to remain faithful to the end.
