ONLY GOD WILL NOT FAIL YOU
Have you ever been disappointed by someone? Has someone ever promised to do something for you and later failed to do so? Have you ever trusted someone so much and when it is time for you to receive what was promised you, then you begin to hear stories that begin with the word *actually*? Has someone promised you money, marriage, material things, and then failed to meet up with the promise? In those situations how did you feel? Angry? sad? depressed? forsaken? tired? Many of us feel this way most times because of so much trust and expectations we have of people.
In the first reading of today, the prophet Jeremiah tells us that those who put their trust in their fellow human beings can never be happy because they will get disappointed. Only those who put their trust in God are sure of happiness. In comparison, he said that those who put their trust in God are like trees planted beside the flowing waters that is ever green and healthy; whereas, those who put their trust in men are like trees planted in the desert which dry up and fade away. Psalm 146:3-5 tells us not to put our trust in princes and mortal men in whom there is no help, when their breath is taken away by God, they will return to clay from which they were made and their plans that day come to nothing. Nevertheless, happy are those who put their trust in God, they will remain happy and all that they do will prosper.
Is there something you are expecting or someone has promised to give to you? Money? Job? Marriage? Material possessions? The person may fail you if you do not commit them into the hands of God.
In the gospel reading, Jesus tells us that when we hope in him and do his will even though we are poor, hungry, mourning or hated, we are assured of eternal happiness and joy in his presence.
Lord grant us the grace to place all our hopes and trust in you. Amen.
