Conversation and teaching in love

Acts 15: 22-31/ Ps 57:8-9. 10 and 12/ Jn 15:12-17

There has been a rise in religious fanaticism and sycophancy among some groups or individuals who either believe they are fighting for God, or know more than others. Such people disregard constituted authorities and teachings as well as have no regard for human life. Jesus says in today’s gospel, “you did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that, you should bear fruit…” We must be guided by the teaching authority of the Church, the body of Christ. This include the Church’s encyclical or pastoral letters and other doctrines that are meant to help us to live according to the mind of Christ, since they are carefully issued in love. We must be careful not to force our own ideas and self-righteousness on others as God’s, but always remind ourselves that God chose us, and he is capable of fighting his own battles. His will is not for us to destroy one another in his name, but rather to begin a conversation that brings understanding and leads to a genuine conversion. Evangelization or the truth of the gospel begins with a conversation and a dialogue done in love.

Prayer: Lord, you gave your Church’s leadership and office of teaching to St. Peter and the other apostles. Grant that it may continue to be guided in all her teachings, by your love and will. Amen.
