The riches, wisdom, knowledge and judgment of God are unsearchable, says St. Paul in the second reading. He acts as he pleases and freely appoints people to certain responsibilities. In the first reading, God exercises his freedom by appointing Eliakim to be the master of the king’s palace. He was a figure of Peter who in today’s Gospel becomes the foundation stone upon which Christ founded his Church. Since Peter was to be a leader of a community of faith, he had to make a profession of faith in Jesus as the anointed one before he could be entrusted with this responsibility. We cannot truly follow Christ unless we understand his identity. Our faith must be built on the truth about Christ. As Catholics, the faith of Peter must be our faith also, and the doctrine which is developed around this faith by Peter and his successors must be ours too. Let us, therefore, adhere to that faith which is apostolic so that we may become sharers in the blessing which Jesus invoked on Peter.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach us to know you as you are and to conform our lives according to that knowledge which we have of you. Amen.
