As at the time Jesus visited Lazarus’ home, his death was imminent. His human nature would have made his feeling of agitation noticeable, but the excitement that trailed his visit and Martha’s industrious personality shaded it all. Jesus had a lot going on inside him and what he needed was just a listening ear; luckily the personality of Mary fitted that profile. This was why Mary was said to have chosen the better part. We cannot know the pain, trouble and disappointment that we have caused God to feel unless we begin to listen to him. A prayerful reflection gives us the enabling disposition to do so. The evening of every day is not really a time for us to be too busy but a time to sit in quiet reflection to peruse through the day’s activities. In that quiet moment of listening, God reveals to us how we have wronged him and others in many ways. This can spark off remorse and repentance in us just like the people of Nineveh. God needs us to give him this time very often so as to save us from the evil of sin.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, grant us that listening disposition to hear your voice daily. Amen.
