Faith comes by hearing

The sign of Jonah that Jesus referred to was the preaching of Jonah to the Ninevites which resulted to their repentance. Jonah worked no sign to move the people to repentance yet they repented. Jesus was pained and disappointed that the same crowd who accused him of being possessed by Beelzebub when he performed a miracle were asking for a sign in order to believe him. Jesus declined their request because as the Son of God his preaching should make more impact than Jonah’s. In our world today, miracle workers pull more crowds than faith preachers. We are not readily moved to listen or study the scriptures and understand our faith but we are moved to fall cheaply for miracle workers. This is why the Christian faith is becoming shallow because pastors now fake miracles to prey on our gullibility. Faith built solely on miracles is a mere shadow; when the miracle ceases that faith crumbles. Our faith should be built on hearing the word of God that lasts eternally. This will arouse true repentance and strengthen our faith.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, strengthen our faith in your word. Amen.
