It can be scary to hear that there is a sin that is unforgiveable by God. Jesus regarded this sin as the sin that blasphemes against the Holy Spirit. They are: Final impenitence, presumption, despair, resisting the known truth, and envy of another’s spiritual good. But traditionally, these sins are summarised into two: Final impenitence or presumption. We fall into this sin when we sin gravely against God without any modicum of remorse or sorrow; or when we sin perpetually against God presuming his mercy without truly repenting. This makes God’s forgiveness impossible to receive because remorse is an indispensable requirement for it. What this then means is that it is not really the case that God cannot forgive this sin. Because when the sinner repents through a remorseful spirit or stops presuming God’s mercy, God can forgive such person. This then depends on our disposition because “God who created us without our help, cannot not save us without our cooperation.” (St Augustine).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, grant us a remorseful heart and the grace to do your will always. Amen.
