In this famous parable of the lost sheep, it is easy to exempt ourselves and see others as the lost sheep. But Jesus is indeed referring to both believers and unbelievers. Believers are often weak, especially when our roots are shallow, and our foundation weak. Life storms are always by the corner. Satan is always a few steps away, eager to see us fall, to recruit us. In the face of these storms, we often backslide into sin. Like sheep under the heat of the sun, we may want to cool off under a shed (the wrong shed), and from there we wander away. For instance, when we feel hurt or neglected, we might become self-centered. The hurt and neglect might develop into bitterness and hostility. Thus, in anger and resentment we commit more sins. And sins make us stubborn towards our Good Shepherd. We all sin; some rather seriously. So, how good are you at listening and following the Good Shepherd? He cannot lead you astray. Satan will.
Prayer: Good Shepherd, you seek us out and lead us to green pastures and restful waters. May we never cease to listen and follow where you lead. Amen.
