THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II MEMORIAL OF ST THOMAS AQUINAS

AN IDLE MIND IS THE DEVIL'S WORKSHOP*

The saying goes that the idle mind is the devil's workshop. We are told in the first reading of today, that David made himself idle by not going on campaigning as other Kings did, but decided to stay at home drinking from his balcony. Seeing Beersheba from the balcony his mind began to think of evil, and he gave in. There are times when we do not do what we are supposed to do, we set our minds on things that are not important, and we allow the evil one to find his way into our lives. David tried to cover his evil by committing a more serious evil which is murder. We cannot hide our sins except to confess and repent from them. We should spend our energies to do good rather than evil. This was the kind of person St Thomas Aquinas was.

St Thomas Aquinas strived and studied so hard so as to be able to refute heresies despite the persecution from his family. He joined the Dominicans because of his love for preaching the word of God. Popularly called the angelic doctor, he was a true scholar who interpreted the works of Aristotle and adopted them into Christian theology which we still use today to understand the theology of the church. When one exerts a lot of energy to do something, God complements and blesses it and causes it to grow.
