FRIDAY SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

A CHRISTIAN WITH A DIFFERENCE

Have you ever come across someone who is known to be very truthful and straightforward. Such people speak and are never doubted.

In the first reading of today, St James tells us to be Christians with a difference. We should not live a double life that will make people ask if we are truly Christians. He asks that we be patient with one another and be understanding. Just as Jesus also prohibits in Matthew 5:34-37, our YES should be YES and when we say NO, it should be NO. We do not need to swear for people to believe us, we should not say YES with our mouth and say NO in our hearts.

This same virtues of patience, understanding and sincerity are also needed in married life as Jesus tells us today in the gospel reading. Marriage is for life, and there is no need for divorce. With the virtues of patience, understanding and sincerity, it can be nurtured and sustained.
