Today is traditionally called “Spy Wednesday” because the gospel narrates Judas’ betrayal of Jesus for 30 silver pieces. We can perceive the tension between Jesus and Judas even when Judas asks, “Is it I, Master?” This tension results from the intimate relationship that Judas was betraying. Jesus kept extending the invitation for conversion to him even while Judas made his mind up for betrayal. In Semitic traditions, dipping the hand into the same bowl suggests deep intimacy between those eating. But despite Jesus’ distress during that meal, he continued to seek help for Judas. Today, we should reflect on those times we have experienced betrayals and how we coped with them. But more importantly, we should reflect on how often we have betrayed God by our sins and how often we have betrayed others? In this Holy Week, we have the opportunity for conversion as a time to reinforce our trust in God like the Prophet Isaiah, even when confronted with imminent betrayal.
PRAYER: O my God, because you are so good, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you, and by the help of your grace, I will not sin again, Amen.
