A common saying is making ground in our society, “everyman/woman for him/herself and God for us all.” The ideology of this saying is individualism, which centers only on the self, on “me, mine and myself”, thereby creating “lone rangers” in the society. This individualistic ideology is steadily growing even in our Churches, making us lose our unique identity as Christians and authentic witnesses. As a result, we fail to use our God-given gifts to promote his kingdom here on earth and better our neighbours’ lives. Accordingly, the first reading explicitly offers us the Christian identity that opposes the ideology of individualism. The early disciples lived a communal life, being one in heart and mind, and sharing all their possessions sincerely and generously. With this selfless attitude learnt from Christ, they catered for the needs of everybody, especially the poor among them. We are, therefore, to become authentic witnesses of Christ in love and charity.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, may the material possessions you have entrusted to me not be a stumbling block towards attaining salvation. Instead, may I use them always to assist those in need. Amen.
