In Matthew 11:20-24, Jesus lashed out to some cities that had their minds closed to his teachings. Today’s Gospel comes immediately after that. Here Jesus identifies the problem of those cities: “They claimed to be wise”. Those who claim to be wise before God are blinded to the truth about him because they always try to explain spiritual truths away. This is why Jesus uses the image of children to teach us how to gain faith and trust in God. By referring to little children, Jesus was talking about the simple of heart. There are three qualities of children that we must imbibe to grow in our faith and trust in God: They are teachable, humble and receptive. No wonder he later said in Matthew 18:3, “I tell you the truth, unless you become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven”. We pray today that we would have a teachable, humble and receptive heart.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, like an infant I come before you today with open heart and mind. May your word bear fruit in my life. Amen.
