The disciples of John the Baptist were concerned that the disciples of Jesus were not fasting. Sometimes people expect others to follow their own human standard but Jesus is our all-time standard. John’s disciples followed the practice of the Pharisees which was mere ritual, and not true worship. They fasted twice a week, (cf Luke 18:12). Such a fast was mere keeping up appearances. What about us? Do we do things in the Church just to keep up appearances? Do we participate in Church activities because others are doing them? We must be convinced of what we are doing. We must be convinced that we are glorifying God with our devotions and not glorifying ourselves.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, please let my devotion and worship be for the glory of your name and not for my vain glory. Amen.
