The Sin of familiarity

In today’s Gospel, Jesus received no respect from his countrymen and kin. After all, they knew him down to his father and mother. Thus, they did not believe him to be the awaited Messiah. They lacked the faith to look beyond the ordinariness of his life and see the spiritual benefit that God bestowed on him. They took for granted what God had consecrated and despised the grace of God which was made available to them. As heavenly wayfarers, we must be careful lest our familiarity with both the ministers and things of God, rob us of that reverence necessary for the sustenance of faith. No matter how close we are to priests, we must not forget that they are consecrated persons. No matter how frequently involved we are in the liturgical activities of the church, we must not cease to see every spiritual exercise as an opportunity for divine encounter.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to maintain a healthy reverence for your sacred ministers for they are your chosen instruments of grace. Amen
