Jesus tells us today that love has two dimensions. Perhaps, we can use the image of the cross in order to understand better. The horizontal part pointing towards heaven could stand for our love for God while the vertical part of the cross signifies our arms reaching out to our brothers and sisters in love and friendship. A simple definition of love we might adopt is that, love is to wish or desire the good of the other. It is not only about giving material gifts, talents or time. All these need to be prompted by a genuine desire for the overall good or progress of those we claim to love. However, the love of God must be deeply rooted in our hearts so that even if we are wounded by our brothers and sisters whom we love, we will love them for the sake of the love we have for God.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us to love one another as you love us so that our world may be a reflection of the kingdom of God. Amen.
