The topic about death which Paul brings to our attention in the first reading is one which we would rather sweep under the carpet. Often, we tell ourselves: I shall worry about death whenever it comes; for now, let me enjoy life. Precisely when we run away from meditating on our death, we are left unprepared when it strikes and we mourn like the pagans “who have no hope”. A renowned scientist once said that it is the knowledge of the fact that he will die, that creates for him the focus on what is essential in life; it also sets for him the urgency of accomplishment, the need to express love now, not later.
PRAYER: Lord, may I never live in denial of my death so that I will not miss the opportunity to fully appreciate life. Amen
