Nativity of the BVM (Feast)

The birth of God’s mother

As a young seminarian I used to struggle with the question: How could Mary be the mother of God? Is not this a heretical teaching? I was in some crisis of faith until my lecturer taught me the relationship between two words, Christotokos and Theotokos. The former teaches that Mary is the mother of Christ while the latter holds Mary to be the mother of God. Mary is the mother of God because Jesus, though having two natures, is not two persons but only one. And that one person is the Logos (the Word which according to John’s Gospel, was God in the beginning). Mary cannot be the mother of the human Jesus only without being the mother of the Logos. She is the mother of the incarnate word.

PRAYER: O God, who hailed Mary through the Angel, grant that I may not despise her through pride or ignorance. Amen
