The first reading of today urges us to “walk in the manner worthy of the calling” to which we have been called. Is this not precisely what Matthew did? Once he heard the call of Jesus, “follow me”, he “rose and followed him”. He left his past behind, an act so extremely difficult for so many. What a sheer power of grace! Once he left his past behind, he never looked back. Lot’s wife, when she looked back, turned into a pillar of salt (Gen. 19: 26). To one who said to Jesus, “I will follow you Lord, but let me say farewell to those at home”, Jesus replied,” No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (Lk 9:61-62). What do you think? Are you fit for God’s kingdom?
PRAYER: Lord, I will follow wherever you lead. Nothing else will I deem more important, henceforth, than this response to your call. Give me the grace. Amen
