We are victorious in God

We root for the underdog. We wait to see the weak protagonist defeat the mighty antagonist. The wider the power imbalance, the sweeter the victory. Daniel’s vision began from yesterday’s reading and continued today. He saw four beasts, representing the kingdoms of Babylon, Medes, Persia, and the Greeks. Under several kings (especially the evil Greek king, Antiochus IV Epiphanes), these kingdoms oppressed God’s people. They beat them down, crushed, terrorized and trampled them underfoot. Daniel’s spirit was “anguished” and “terrified” by what he saw. We too can feel like Daniel at the sight of the poor, the powerless, or the oppressed suffering in the hands of those with money, power and authority. And maybe you are the underdog. Daniel reminds us, in the midst of our helplessness, that ultimately all power belongs to God. More importantly, our God also roots for the underdog. At the proper time, he will not only destroy the wicked who oppress his holy ones, but will also vindicate and reward his holy ones. So, be valiant in battle.

Prayer: God Almighty, when oppressed or defeated, may we always know that you are at our side, and will see us through. Amen.
