The second reading addresses how we are to wait for the Lord: “while you are waiting, do your best to live lives without spot or stain so that he will find you at peace.” Have you ever waited for the result of a crucial exam or job interview? This waiting is often infused with anxieties. Imagine also the feelings of a couple awaiting the birth of their baby. Or a military spouse awaiting the spouse’s return from a three-year oversea assignment. This kind of waiting will be infused with lots of joy. There will be lots of preparations while they wait. There may be a baby shower and shopping for baby items. First time parents might take some classes. The military spouse will prepare the home, maybe cook the spouse’s favorite dish, etc. Both scenarios involve an active, joyful waiting. When it comes to preparing for the celebration of Christmas, we do have an active, joyful waiting. We are filled with joy as we run around buying, and preparing, even spiritually. However, bringing joy and activeness to our waiting for the final coming of the Lord is more important and more serious. We can achieve this by doing our “best to live lives without spot or stain”. And doing so joyfully and actively.
Prayer: Almighty God, help us to wait for your Son’s coming by actively and joyfully preparing the way for him. Amen.
