Ahaz, the King of Judah, was blatantly disobeying God by worshiping idols. Frightened by impending attacks from the kings of Israel and Aram, he turned to the pagan king of Assyria for alliance. This was against God’s injunctions. So, God intervened and sent Isaiah to reassure Ahaz that he would save him and Judah. Unwilling to stop idol worship and follow God’s plan, Ahaz feigned humility: “I will not tempt the Lord!” Still, God gave him a sign – a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, Emmanuel. God was reassuring Ahaz to trust him because he was indeed with him. What things frighten you and your family? What forces do you contend with? In these situations, do you trust God or in your own plans, in fake prophets and fetish practices like Ahaz? Do you listen to God’s reassuring presence - Emmanuel? Do you hear him telling you to not be discouraged? If it takes time, remember, those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall run and not be weary (Isaiah 40:31).
Prayer: Merciful God, you never abandon us even when we are disobeying you. May the celebration of your Son’s birth help us to trust you more deeply. Amen.
