From God, back to God

Hannah was childless for years. Peninnah, her co-wife, who had many children taunted her endlessly. Hannah prayed for a child, promising to dedicate him to God if he gave her a son. Her prayers aligned with God’s plan and were granted. Samuel was born. Then it was time to fulfill her part of the deal. Many parents find it difficult to leave their only child to become a priest or reverend sister. In Israel a woman was completely dependent on her son for her livelihood, should her husband die. Hannah was already having a tough time even with her husband alive. So, it would be understandable if she decided to keep Samuel back. We remember Abraham and Isaac, too. God also sent us his only Son. These are very difficult, selfless gifts. While it might be easier to give out valuable things, there are some we find indispensable. They might include our career, passion or desires, education, time, material things, etc. When God requires us to sacrifice a friendship, love, job, etc. for a higher cause, would we be able to?

Prayer: Generous God, help us to appreciate your blessings. May we give back to you as generously as you give us. Amen.
