We are Catholics

One of the characteristics of the Church which we profess in the creed is that our Church is Catholic. This means it is universal, inviting everyone irrespective of race, language, social class, or gender to come and share in her doctrine, liturgy, mission, spirituality, etc. In the first reading, God is portrayed as being for all peoples of the world and not the exclusive preserve of the chosen people. In his house there is space for foreigners also, for it shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. In the Gospel, Jesus broke the barriers of culture, geographical boundary and gender to attend to the need of the Canaanite woman. Following the example of Jesus, St. Paul too ministered to the Gentiles. All of the above give us examples of what it means to be really Catholic. Do we have the courage also to create a friendly atmosphere for all in our churches, religious communities, and religious gatherings?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you taught us that your house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. Give us the grace of welcoming all and sharing our spiritual heritage with them. Amen.
