Jesus told us that we too will be persecuted because of him. But that we should not be afraid because the Holy Spirit will be the one speaking and working through us. Today, we are told that Stephen was filled with grace and power. This is the power that flows from the presence of the Holy Spirit within us. This is the Divine presence and energy living and acting through us, accomplishing even the impossible. So, in the face of threats of death, rather than defend himself, Stephen stood his ground and preached the message of salvation. We too have faced, and will continue to face trials and difficulties when we bear witness to Christ in our lives. We will either give up or stand firm. This will depend on our spiritual energy. The good news is that we have means of replenishing and sustaining our spiritual energy, including prayer, the scriptures, sacrifices, the Sacraments, etc. God is always ready to grant grace in abundance to those who ask him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you call us to stand and bear witness for us even in the face of trials. May your grace and power always accompany us as we do so. Amen.
