“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Shouldn’t this be common sense for believers? He is infinite. We are finite. He is the Alpha and Omega. He created our brain, an infinitesimal fraction of his wisdom. So, why are we bent on understanding his thoughts and ways? For instance, the events of the Holy Innocents are outrageous from many angles. Jesus, King and Saviour of the world, the Prince of peace is born. Clueless King Herod feels threatened and decides to kill him. Not knowing the baby’s location and age, he decides to kill the baby boys in the city and its vicinity, two-year-old and under. Innocent babies die. Mothers weep for their children, and will not be consoled. When God’s ways seem illogical and unreasonable, and you are tempted to grumble and murmur, remember that: “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
Prayer: Eternal God, grant us grace and patience when we do not understand your ways. Help us to remember that everything works out well for those who follow you. Amen.
