Pentecost Sunday (Gifts given for mission)

Acts 2:1-11/ Ps104:1.24.29-30. 31. 34/ 1 Cor 12:3b-7. 12-13 sequence veni sancta spiritus/ Jn 20:19-23

Pentecost means the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus; and it is the 10th day after his ascension. On this day, the disciples received various gifts. Pentecost marks the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise, “I am with you always till the end of time” (Mt 28:20). When the disciples experienced the coming of the Holy Spirit, they were filled with confidence and courage as never before. The once fearful and cowardly disciples, who ran away when Jesus was arrested, now openly proclaimed with courage, confidence, zeal and passion the same Jesus they once denied and avoided. The lessons that we must take away from the Pentecost events are: First, that God is always faithful to his promise. There is also the lesson of unity in diversity; though many with different gifts the disciples worked in a unity. They put their various gifts at the service of evangelization. The gift of speech, prayer and prophecy helped them to reach out to more people. The gifts given to them were for the mission of the Church for the salvation of souls. God has opened the door of salvation to all peoples. What gifts have you received from the Holy spirit and how have you put them in the service of the mission of salvation of souls?

Prayer: Come O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and enkindle in us the fire of your love. Amen.
