People take pride in boasting about their achievements. It boosts their sense of self -worth and importance in their community. Some boast to prove to others that they have achieved more than those they are competiting with. These days, people even boast of things they should be ashamed of. With boasting also comes arrogance and disrespect. St Paul argues that boasting of worldly treasures and achievements is an exhibition of foolishness. He says: “And everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift.” We should think of ourselves as trustees rather than owners. King Solomon in his riches declared “I realised that these pleasures are from the hand of God” (Eccl 2:24). Following the example of Paul, if Christians must boast, then it would be how God has used them for his glory despite their unworthiness. Let us live our lives wholeheartedly in light, treasuring the things of heaven, our true inheritance.
PRAYER: O Jesus, make me realise that I have is from you. Make me treasure the spiritual gifts and never let me be distracted by material things.
