ST CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA - No shortcut to success

To settle the dispute that arose between Abraham and Lot’s workers, Abraham asked that the land be shared. Abraham as the elder of the two would have chosen first; moreover, the entire land was promised him by God. Abraham displayed so much humility and generosity. Abraham did not see it as worth fighting for. He valued peace with Lot over anything else (Phil 2:4). Abraham exhibited so much trust in God. He knew God would still favour him if he is left with the less fertile area. Lot was blinded by the material advantage that the Jordan Valley possessed. Jesus in the gospel warns us about choosing the wide gate and the way that seems easy. In a materialistic world, where people are quick to choose and use the wide and easy way, we are challenged to go against the arrow.  The narrow gate does not mean that only a privileged few can enter through it, rather it means the road is demanding but rewarding. God’s grace and mercy is assured when we make use of the narrow gate.

PRAYER: When life presents me with the enticement of the fast and wide way, gracious Lord, make me realise that you are the surest providence. Amen
