IRENAEUS - Faithful God

St Irenaeus was bishop of Lyons, France for over two decades. He devoted time in studying the scriptures and so was well equipped to counter Gnosticism. He wrote many works to solidify the Church’s core teachings. Little wonder he is called “Father of Catholic Theology.” He was martyred under Emperor Lucius Septimus Severus. Today’s first reading recounts the vision Abraham had after he defeated the coalition of armies (Gen 14:1-12) and rejected the reward offered by the King of Sodom (Gen 14:21-24). In the vision, Abraham expressed his doubts to God but God assured him of being his “shield” and “reward.”. Like the Blessed Virgin Mary, Abraham’s questions were not to doubt God’s ability to fulfil his promises but to  reaffirm and strengthen his faith in God. This was counted for him as righteousness (Rom 4:1-3). God reassured him in the most revered of ways at that time. As we look up to God for the fulfilment of his promises, remember that we serve a God that is too faithful to fail. His timing is perfect. Our God is good and faithful, do not expect something less.

Prayer: Lord, give me the grace to always trust in your faithfulness and love. Amen
