SAINTS PETER AND PAUL - Weak vessels made strong pillars for Christ

Today we celebrate the solemnity of the two great pillars of the Church. Both played significant roles in the stability and growth of the early Church. Peter and Paul experienced persecutions as recorded in today’s first and second reading but these did not deter them from continuing the mission they were called to. Peter had his struggles as a disciple of Christ, but demonstrated the will to rise after each disappointment. Jesus entrusted the Church to him, commanding him to gather others when he picks himself up. He also asked him to feed the flock. After the Pentecost experience, Peter was seen converting many to the new religion. Paul on the other hand was a controversial character. He moved from persecuting Christians to winning souls for Christ. He travelled from one city to another, preaching the gospel of Christ. Both men used their personalities to advance the kingdom of God because they allowed him to work in and through them. Both were killed during Nero persecution of Christians. St Peter was crucified on Vatican Hill where St Peter’s Basilica is standing while Paul was beheaded on the Ostian way at Tre Fontane, the site of the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls.

PRAYER: Eternal Father, purify me and make me worthy for your glory. Amen
