God appeared when Abram was ninety-nine years old to change his name and that of his wife. The name “Abram” means “father of many.” Well, he had many things except children (Gen 20:14-16; 24:35; 26:12-13). To accomplish his plan, God changed his name to “Abraham” meaning “father of many nations.” One could understand the reason behind Abraham’s laughter. How would he announce his name to the people? It would surely provoke laughter among them. Changing of name in the scriptures indicate a new identity and mission (Jacob-Israel, Simon- peter). All baptised got new names at baptism. Some may not like their baptismal names because of how it sounds, or it was chosen for them at infant baptism. At confirmation, we get to choose another name as authentic Christians. God desires to accomplish the meaning of the name with which he sealed you with the sign of the Spirit.
PRAYER: Lord, fan into flame your Spirit resident in me. Prepare me and make me to begin to fulfil the mission you have for me. Amen
