Tolerance amidst hate

Jesus was denied entry into the Samaritan town in the gospel of today because the Samaritans and the Jews were long-time enemies. James and John instinctively reacted in anger and asked Jesus if they should send down fire to consume the entire Samaritan town. Jesus rebuked them and by that revealed that a true disciple should repay hate with love. In whatever we do in life, especially in respect to our jobs and responsibilities, we should not be too instinctive in responding to hostile characters. Love and tolerance should permeate our reactions knowing that we are not surrounded by perfect people. The principle, “desperate time calls for desperate measures,” does not apply in all cases. We should be wise to know exactly when and how to apply this principle having the common good in mind.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we pray for your wisdom and direction when surrounded by hate. Amen.
