The call to true discipleship does not demand a response just for the day or just for the moment but an undying response to the call of Jesus. A true disciple should hear that call of Jesus – “follow me” in the daily choices of life. Jesus gave three responses to the three would-be disciples. To the first he said “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.” To the second Jesus warned “Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” And to the third, “No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” From these responses of Jesus we see clearly that once we choose to follow him, our wishes and desires will take a different turn. We shall experience discomfort and temptations. But if we endure, we shall inherit eternal life.
