The first reading affirms that God exists. To say that God does not exist is foolishness. It is only a fool that denies the existence of God. God created us and gave us life. St Paul in his famous address in the Areopagus, confirms that in God “we live, move and exist,” quoting the poet Epimenides of Cnossos. While the fool denies the existence of God, St Elizabeth of Hungary affirms the existence of God with the quality of her life. Elizabeth lived her life for God. Although she was from a royal and wealthy family, she learned the virtue of humility. She refused to wear her golden and bejeweled coronet in Church. She retorted “How can I, when our dear Lord wears but a crown of thorns!” She was a pious and devoted lady, active in works of charity. She was known for mortification, fasting, scourging and prayer. She was a compassionate soul who distributed much of her wealth among the poor and built a hospital in honour of St Francis where she personally tended to the lepers. She lived her life for God. Let us learn to live our lives for God.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, give me the grace to be able to live my life entirely for you. Amen
