To Jesus, through Mary

I often wonder why our separated brethren incessantly attack us, Catholics, with regard to our teachings on Mary. A sincere and open-minded skeptic examines all evidence. On this issue of Mary, the origins of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception offer a resounding testimony or authentication. It was a controversial topic since it had no scriptural foundation nor did it exist previously in the Church’s Tradition. After years of theological debates and rigorous processes, in 1854 Pope Pius IX promulgated the doctrine of Immaculate Conception as dogma – that which we are bound to believe as Catholics. It was as if God watched and smiled as the debates lasted because four years later, our Blessed Mother herself appeared to the young uneducated Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, and told her: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” These are recorded history. Additionally, the miracles that take place at Lourdes every year speak volumes. Jesus promised that he will be with his Church till the end of time. He sent the Holy Spirit to guide her. May we trust and treasure our Catholic faith, and through all the treasures contained therein work out our salvation. Our Catholic teachings on Mary are to help us enter into a deeper and more beautiful relationship with her, ultimately leading us closer to Jesus himself.

Prayer: Lord, as we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of Mary, renew and strengthen our faith in your Church, the instrument of our salvation. Amen.
